The Networking Certifications I Would Actually Recommend in 2026

A few days ago, Karsten Iwen challenged me on a previous article.

His point was simple:

"Where are the networking certifications?"

It was a fair criticism.

After all, I started my career in networking. Long before cloud computing, AI, digital transformation, and cybersecurity became boardroom topics, there were routers, switches, fibre, wireless networks, routing tables, spanning trees, and engineers desperately trying to work out why packets weren't reaching their destination.

Networking may no longer be the most fashionable area of IT.

But it remains one of the most important.

Every cloud platform depends on a network.

Every AI workload depends on a network.

Every cybersecurity programme depends on a network.

When networking works, nobody notices.

When it fails, everyone notices.

So if I were advising someone who wanted to build a career specifically in networking, wireless, infrastructure, connectivity, or architecture, these are the certifications I would still recommend in 2026.

Before We Start

Unlike my broader IT certifications article, this list focuses specifically on:

  • Network Engineers
  • Network Architects
  • Wireless Engineers
  • Infrastructure Specialists
  • Data Centre Engineers
  • WAN Engineers
  • Service Provider Engineers

I also need to make something clear.

Unlike many technology disciplines, networking still rewards practical experience heavily.

A networking certification might get you an interview.

A routing loop, BGP outage, wireless deployment, or data centre migration will teach you lessons no certification ever will.

With that out of the way, let's begin.


1. Cisco CCNA

If I could recommend only one networking certification to someone entering the industry, it would still be the CCNA.

Some engineers dismiss it because it has become common.

I think that's precisely why it matters.

The CCNA covers:

  • Routing
  • Switching
  • VLANs
  • IPv4
  • IPv6
  • Wireless fundamentals
  • Security fundamentals
  • Automation basics

The examination currently costs approximately $300 USD (£225 GBP / €264 EUR).

My View

CCNA remains the strongest networking foundation available.

Every networking professional should understand the concepts covered here, regardless of vendor.

2. Cisco CCNP Enterprise

This is where networking stops being theory and starts becoming engineering.

CCNP Enterprise dives into:

  • OSPF
  • BGP
  • Advanced routing
  • Enterprise architecture
  • SD-WAN
  • Wireless integration
  • Network design

My View

If I were hiring a senior network engineer tomorrow, CCNP would immediately attract my attention.

Unlike many certifications, it's difficult to fake genuine understanding at this level.

3. Cisco CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure

The CCIE remains one of the most respected technical certifications in the industry.

Technology trends have come and gone.

The CCIE remains.

Cloud didn't kill it.

Virtualisation didn't kill it.

AI won't kill it.

My View

A CCIE doesn't automatically make someone a great engineer.

But I've rarely met a CCIE who wasn't technically impressive.

4. CWNA (Certified Wireless Network Administrator)

This is where networking and wireless networking begin to separate.

Many network engineers understand switching.

Far fewer understand RF.

CWNA covers:

  • Radio frequency fundamentals
  • Signal propagation
  • Antenna theory
  • WLAN security
  • Wi-Fi standards
  • Wireless troubleshooting

My View

Anyone serious about wireless should start here.

Wi-Fi is a specialist discipline in its own right.

Treating it as "networking without cables" is one of the biggest mistakes I see organisations make.

5. CWNP Professional Certifications

Once you've completed CWNA, the broader CWNP ecosystem becomes available.

Key certifications include:

My View

For pure wireless expertise, CWNP remains one of the most respected certification tracks available.

When I see advanced CWNP certifications on a CV, I know the individual has invested serious effort into understanding wireless properly.


6. Ekahau ECSE Design

This isn't a networking certification.

It's something better.

It's a practical wireless design certification.

Topics include:

  • Predictive surveys
  • Capacity planning
  • RF modelling
  • Site survey methodology
  • Enterprise Wi-Fi design

My View

I've met people with numerous networking certifications who couldn't design a reliable wireless network.

I've met ECSE-certified engineers who could walk into a building and immediately identify design issues.

That's not an accident.

7. Ekahau ECSE Advanced

This takes things further.

The focus shifts towards:

  • Advanced RF troubleshooting
  • High-density environments
  • Spectrum analysis
  • Complex wireless optimisation
  • Enterprise-scale deployments

My View

This is where theory meets reality.

If your career revolves around wireless design and troubleshooting, I would place this above many traditional networking certifications.

8. Juniper JNCIS-ENT

Cisco isn't the only networking vendor that matters.

Juniper remains extremely relevant in enterprise and service provider environments.

The JNCIS certification validates:

  • Routing
  • Switching
  • Junos
  • Enterprise operations

My View

Juniper engineers are often underrated.

The market sees fewer of them, which often makes experienced Juniper professionals surprisingly valuable.

9. Juniper JNCIP-ENT

Think of this as the Juniper equivalent of CCNP.

Advanced routing, switching, troubleshooting, and design.

My View

In the right environments, JNCIP-certified engineers are every bit as capable as their Cisco counterparts.

There are simply fewer of them.

10. Palo Alto PCNSE

At first glance, this may seem like an odd inclusion.

After all, it's a security certification.

But modern networking and security are increasingly inseparable.

The PCNSE covers:

  • Next-generation firewalls
  • Segmentation
  • Application visibility
  • Zero Trust
  • Security architecture

My View

The most valuable network engineers increasingly understand security.

The most valuable security engineers increasingly understand networking.

PCNSE sits neatly in the middle.

Honourable Mention: Arista

If I were writing this article ten years ago, Arista probably wouldn't appear.

Today it absolutely deserves a mention.

Arista has become a major force in:

  • Modern data centres
  • Cloud environments
  • Financial trading
  • High-performance networking

My View

If your career path leads towards data centre architecture or cloud infrastructure, Arista skills are becoming increasingly valuable.

The certification ecosystem is smaller than Cisco's, but demand for experienced Arista engineers continues to grow.

The Skill Missing From Almost Every Networking Certification

If there is one thing I would add to every networking certification programme, it would be automation.

The modern network engineer is increasingly becoming a software engineer who happens to specialise in networking.

If I were starting my networking career again today, I would spend almost as much time learning Python as I would learning routing protocols.

Not because Python replaces networking knowledge.

Because it amplifies it.

I'd recommend learning:

No certification on this list is likely to increase your long-term value more than combining networking expertise with automation skills.


The Most Underrated Networking Skill: IPv6

IPv6 occupies a strange position in the industry.

Everyone agrees it's the future.

Many organisations continue behaving as though it isn't.

The result is a surprising shortage of engineers who genuinely understand IPv6.

Not people who can explain the theory.

People who can:

  • Design IPv6 networks
  • Deploy dual-stack environments
  • Troubleshoot IPv6 routing
  • Secure IPv6 environments
  • Plan migration strategies

One of the reasons IPv6 isn't listed as a certification recommendation is simple:

There isn't a universally respected IPv6 certification equivalent to CCNA, CWNA, or CCNP.

IPv6 tends to be treated as a module inside larger certifications.

Personally, I think that's a mistake.

Engineers who genuinely understand IPv6 remain surprisingly rare.

And rare skills often become valuable skills.

Future-Proofing


Final Thoughts

Networking isn't disappearing.

It's becoming foundational.

Cloud gets the headlines.

AI gets the investment.

Cybersecurity gets the board attention.

Yet every one of those technologies still depends on packets moving reliably from one place to another.

Strong networking engineers remain difficult to find.

Strong wireless engineers are even harder to find.

And networking professionals who combine traditional networking skills with wireless expertise, automation, security knowledge, and IPv6 experience are becoming genuinely rare.

If I had to summarise networking certifications in a single sentence, it would be this:

Learn enough certifications to get noticed. Learn enough networking to stay employed.
